It is a fascinating family psychodrama that deals with a father and daughter whose life style is changed by the arrival of three newcomers.

Jack Salvin (Daniel Day-Lewis), a terminally ill single father and his sixteen year old daughter Rose (Camilla Belle) live on a small island off the East Coast of United States. He is a stubborn man who has protected Rose from the influence of the outside world. He made sure that there is no television in their small house. While Jack visited the mainland very frequently he made Rose stay back.

Rose is entering womanhood and Jack is suffering from a fatal heart disease. Jack is very much concerned about Rose, in case anything happen to him, mainly because Rose has indicated that she will commit suicide if he dies. Jack invites his girlfriend Kathleen (Catherine Keener) with whom he has sex with, to move in with him and Rose. She has two teenage sons Rodney (Ryan McDonald) and Thadius (Paul Dano), they also move in with Jack and Rose.

Rose feels threatened by having to share her father's affection with a strange woman. Seeing her father behind closed doors, aroused sexual curiosity in Rose. She asks Rodney to have sex with her but he declines. Then she approached Thadius who was also not interested in her. Then she hook up with Rodney's friend Red Berry (Jean Malone) with whom she has a sexual relationship. Also, sexual tension develops between father and daughter, that put every one in a strange situation. Find out what will happen to Jack, Rose as well as Kathleen.

Director, writer Rebecca Miller, has a rare talent to create characters and make them alive and active on screen. She has explored a very sensitive theme, an unusual relationship between a father and daughter, for this film. Sometimes the story is out of sync with the various plots, but she successfully brings out various issues without partiality. A sentimental opening and a dramatic end are highlights of this film.

Daniel Day-Lewis presents a decent performance as Jack. But the movie belongs to the stunningly beautiful young actress Camilla Belle. The teenage actress as Rose, presents a very strong and memorable performance. She is determined, willfull and strong enough to show her emotions in sync with the rhythm of the plot. She is an impressive new comer and this could be her first step towards stardom. It is a well directed ,well acted film that brings out the unusual relationship between a father and daughter.

We rate this movie GOOD.
