A modern day Western tale that deals with family relationships and bonding between a grandfather and a
granddaughter that he never knew he had.
Robert Redford plays Einar Gilkyson, a cowboy living on a ranch in Ishawooa,
Wyoming. He is living with his hired hand and best friend Mitch (Morgan Freeman) who
was badly injured by a bear a year ago.
Almost 12 years ago, Einar had lost his only son Griffin in a car accident.
Einar had been blaming Jean (Jennifer Lopez), Griffin's wife, for his
son's death because she was driving the car at the time of the accident.
After his son's death, his wife left him and his life turned out to be
a total mess. He could never overcome his son's loss and gets addicted
to alcohol.
One day Jean showed up at Einar's ranch with his granddaughter Griff (Beeca Gardner) that he never knew he
had. Jean had been running away from an abusive boyfriend and she begged Einar to shelter her and her
daughter. Einar agreed to let them stay temporarily.

In the meantime,
Jean got a job as a waitress and Griff stayed back at the ranch and developed
a bond with her grandfather. Their casual conversations opened up a great
relationship between the granddaughter and the grandfather. But Jean was
always afraid that one day her ex-boyfriend is going to show up and disrupt
their new found peaceful life. She decided to report the matter ahead
of time to the local sheriff Crane (Josh Lucas) just for her own safety.
But Crane utilized Jean's precarious situation and ended up having an
affair with her. Find out more about this old fashioned family story.
Swedish director Lasse Hallstrom skillfully narrates a tale of relationships. He
tries to get the best out of all the cast. The story is kind of predictable and the pace
is very slow and the affair between Lopez and Lucas is an unnecessary event. The photography
and the scenery are very good.
It is good to watch Oscar winners Robert Redford and Morgan Freeman together in this film.
Both of them present an excellent performance. But Jennifer Lopez just puts up a
mediocre performance. The new comer Beeca Gardner is very good. The bond between the granddaughter
and the grandfather is really touching.
Even though it is an old fashioned, predictable story, as an entertainer it is a
charmer especially for the adults. It touches issues like domestic violence,
loss of loved one, loneliness and relationships. Fans of Redford and Lopez will definitely enjoy this film.
