Movie is all about a family's harrowing 28 day stay
in an Amityville, New York home marred by murder.
The movie is set on 412 Ocean Avenue in Amityville,
New York in the year 1975. Based on a true story of events chronicled
by Jay Anson from the real George Lutzin book "The Amityville Horror",
in which the occupants of the house were slaughtered a year earlier
by a member of the family.
George and Kathy Lutz (Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George)
found their dream home at an incredible price because of the massacre
that took place at that home. Their three children are unaware of the
history of the home.
Right after they moved into the house, inexplicable
phenomena begin to occur. George is a mild mannered man and the things
at home drives him crazy. Kathy and the kids are scared out of their
wits by nightmares and visions. The Lutz's family survived there only
for 28 days. They moved out of the house leaving all their belongings
behind. From slamming doors to bizarre noises and swarms of flies, their
bargain deal of the house turned out to be a terrible nightmare.
Director
Andrew Douglas has skillfully tried to put new life into an old story.
He tries to put together too many false alarm jolts. He uses restless
spirits over and over to give a scary look to the movie but it is not
scary enough to make you jump. This movie doesn't have much improvement
over the original one.
Ryan Reynolds presents a decent performance in a serious
role. The beautiful and talented Australian actress Melissa George is
very good as Kathy. These two gifted performers does a good job to save
the film.
No way is this movie going to scare you to death. It
has many moments filled with suspense. In a way the story will keep
you anxious and make you keep wondering what will happen next. The film
is graphically well done. It is a decent but flawed horror film.
We rate this film AVERAGE.
