If your relatives are known to give money during every family gathering,
if a pooja is done before every major event in your life and if you make
tea the old fashioned way—with boiling water and tea leaves….then you can
relate to the film "American Desi." The storyline is quite simple —five
American-born Indian kids head off to college trying to figure out what
role their Indian heritage and their own American culture play in their
future.
The main character is a true and true American. Krishnagopal Reddy’s
(Deep Katdare) only problem is that he is born to Indian parents. Born
and brought up in the suburbs of New Jersey, Kris is ready to leave his
parents, along with their "weird" Indian traditions behind and search
for a more Americanized way of life. But his Indian background leads him
to have three very Indian roommates, or room partners as they are referred
to in the film, much to his dislike. There is Jagjit Singh (Ronobir Lahiri),
an outgoing, artistically-oppressed Sikh, Salim Ali Khan (Rizwan Manji),
a conservative traditional Muslim and Ajay Pandya (Kal Penn), an Afro-centric
Hindu homeboy.
Although he tries to avoid them, along with his Indian background—they
help him reconnect with his heritage for the purpose of "connecting" with
an Indian beauty Nina Shah (Purva Bedi), who catches his eye during class.
With the help of his "room partners", he recognizes his heritage and gets
the hand of the beautiful Indian girl—a fairy tale ending to a movie which
is quite different from the usual fairytale.
This romantic comedy has a bit of everything for everyone: an Indian
brawl, a song and dance routine, love and lots of laughter. A good time
can be had by all.
