Pragjyoti International Dance Festival (PIDF) is an annual feature organised by Kalpa, a Society for Promotion of Literature, Art, Culture and Social Harmony; held in Assam in association with the Sivasagar District Administration, Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) (Ministry of External Affairs, Govt of India), Assam Tourism Development Corporation Limited, Directorate of Cultural Affairs (Govt. of Assam) and Sub-Divisional Office- Bokakhat. The venture began in 2009, as an initiative of using dance as a medium towards revisiting the rich heritage and culture of Assam and protecting the bounties of nature conferred upon the region.
The Fest is held at various tourism locales of Assam with Guwahati being the main venue. The festival aims at creating an awareness of Assam’s natural resources by extending its venues and revisiting the natural history sites with a message for conservation of its pristine glory. Sattriya danseuse Anwesa Mahanta is the Joint Secretary of Kalpa & Festival Director of PIDF. Kalpa, under the leadership of Professor Pradip Jyoti Mahanta and Anwesa Mahanta, has been endeavouring to provide a platform for the promotion of young dance talent and also a space for social and cultural convergence. Conceptualized to exhibit the wide range of India’s classical dance forms together on one platform and to celebrate the rich heritage of Assam, the festival showcases a kaleidoscope of artists from different parts of India.
Dancers not only from different parts of India but also from abroad (Bangladesh, Nepal, UK, US, Ukraine, Poland, Russia, France) and from various parts of Assam take part in the Festival. Each passing year sees more and more participation from the artists , viewers as well as the connoisseurs. Besides the dance performances, Kalpa also organizes a series of interactive sessions where students will get an opportunity to learn and interact with the various classical dancers performing at the festival.
