Kolkata ( Calcutta ) like the other metro's, offers an
enthusiastic shopper a range of commodities that suit every budget. There are a
lot of markets or malls selling all kinds of wares from Bengal's very own Tant
and Baluchari sarees in cotton and silk, Bengal handlooms with their beautiful
workmanship in popular styles such as Daccai or Thangail Jamdani work,
handicrafts including brass figurines and the famous Bankura horse, leather
items at reasonable rates, intricate gold and silver jewelry, electronic goods,
Chinese imported goods in China town and others at good bargains. The following
are some of the popular shopping places in the city.
New Market
The Sir Hogg Market better known as New Market located at 19, Lindsay
street is arguably one of Calcutta's best shopping centers. Designed by an
East Indian Railway Company Architect, it was opened in 1874 and named after
the commissioner, Sir Stuart Hogg. Earlier it had a garden with a silvery
fountain and benches for tired shoppers. Today, it continues to be a premier
shopping area despite a part of it being burnt down in late 1985. Its red
brick Gothic clock tower bears testimony to past grandeur. Linen to cakes,
fruits to fish, all and sundry is available in wide ranging choices and prices.
There are 2000 stalls in seven blocks and the remarkable feature of these
stalls is that they are arranged merchandise wise i.e. there are rows of stalls
dealing with one particular line of goods. It is the best place for bargaining. Open
10.30 am to 7.30 pm from Monday to Friday and Saturdays till 2:30 pm. Sunday
holiday.
Close to New Market are the Treasure Island (A/C mall) and
the Shreeram Arcade shopping malls mainly dealing with clothes, both Indian
and Western, footwear, costume jewellery, music CD's, tapes etc. These malls
open from from 10am-8pm from Tuesday to Saturday and from 1 pm - 8pm on Mondays.

Wholesale
flower market
In the early morning this market fills with colourful flowers from the
northern part of Calcutta. You can see flowers every where in this market
on the ground, on people's head, in carts and trucks and on display. By 0700
the market start winding down and by 8 pm all the sale is over.
Air condition Market
Located at Shakespere Sarani, it is a smaller version of the New market
but not with all the variety of goods that the former holds. The wares available
include clothes, jewelry, watches, electronic goods, artificial plants etc.
Its more suitable for the elite people looking for exclusive stuff. But with
other exclusive shopping malls opening up, A/C market has lost most of its

Dakhinapan
Dakhinapan located near Dhakuria flyover and Golpark is the place for
handicrafts and handlooms. The open air complex spread over two floors, houses
government Emporiums from different states selling their wares at fixed, but
reasonable prices. There are also some other private shops selling Indian
ethnic ware, dress materials and footwear, where bargaining is possible. The
complex has some fast food stalls. Open on all days except Sundays. Timings
: 2 pm to 7.30 pm on Mondays and 11am to 7.30 pm on all other days.
Burrabazar
It is the main centre of wholesale and retail trade in Calcutta dealing
with textiles, fruits and other goods. It is a bewildering medley of crowds
and merchandise. The businessmen who operate here, care nothing for appearances.
Situated on the Mahatma Gandhi road to the north of B.B.D.Bagh, the place
is accessible on foot from B.B.D. Bagh or by any bus going towards Howrah
from B.B.D. Bagh. Timings : 10.30 am to 6.30 pm from Tuesday to Saturday and
1.30 pm to 6.30 pm on Mondays.
College Street
This is the place to be, if you are specifically shopping for books. The
street is lined with book shops, some of them the best in the country. The
place is crowded so it is best park your vehicle at the entrance and go on
foot through the streets.
Gariahat
One can find some of the best saree shops here. There is also vegetables,
meat and fish available. Open 6.30 am-9.30 pm from Monday to Saturday and
from 6.30 am to 1.00 pm on Sundays.
Lake Market
Located at Rashbehari Avenue, this market is famous for its South Indian
coffee. Open Monday to Saturday from 6.30 am to 9.30 pm and on Sundays
from 6.30 am to 1.30 pm.
Vardaan Market
Vardaan Market, an air conditioned building located at 24A, Camac street
have a large number of shops spread on three floors selling all kinds of wares.
There are shops selling imported clothes, cosmetics etc in the basement, music
and jewellery shops on the ground floor and Indian ethnic wear on the first
floor. The complex is open 11.30 pm - 7pm from Sunday to Wednesday and from
2pm - 7pm on Fridays. Thursday is a holiday. After shopping you can try out
the tasty snacks from one of the food stalls on the pavement outside the complex.
Fancy Market
Fancy market located in the Khidderpore area caters to a huge range of
electronic items, clothes, glassware etc from places like Singapore, Bangkok
and Hong Kong. There are good bargains but there is no guarantee for any products.
Open 11 am- 9pm from Tuesday to Sunday. Monday is a holiday.
