Places of Interest - Palayamkottai | Two Tier Over Bridge | Pathamadai | Deivacheyalpuram | Mukkudal | Ambasamudram

Palayamkottai
Palayamkottai, the twin town of Tirunelveli is situated on the eastern bank of the perpetual river Thamirabarani about 3 km east of the city. Surrounded by paddy fields, the place is well known for its numerous educational institutions of which some of them are 100 years old and so known as 'Oxford of South India'. This little city has one of the most popular Science Centres in South India, a satellite unit of Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum, Bangalore and a Government Museum with a huge and realistic fibreglass Tyrannosaurus rex.

Palayamkottai is considered as the headquarters of the Church Missionary Society in Tamil Nadu. Holy Trinity Cathedral built in 1826 as the main place of worship is well known for its 35m tall spire which is considered as the landmark of the city. The diocese of the cathedral church of the Church of South India and the St. Francis Xavier church of Jesuit mission built in 1863 are the other important churches located here. There are several Hindu temples namely Siva Temple, Ramar Temple, Gopalaswamy Temple, Uchini Makali temple and Amman Temple.

Another landmark of Palyamkottai is the central prison, notable for its large capacity and tight security. Several eminent people had imprisoned here during the pre-independence era and afterwards. 

Two Tier Over Bridge
Two tier over bridge at Tirunelveli Junction known as Thiruvalluvar bridge is the first of its kind in India. This 800 meter bridge was constructed to avoid the railway line crossing and was opened for traffic in 1972. This bridge consists of 25 spans of which 13 are of bow string arch, each with a width of 30.30 meters and 12 are single tier R.C.C girder each having a width of 11.72 meters.

Pathamadai
The village of Pathamadai, situated 13 kms from Tirunelveli, is known for its palm leaf articles and beautiful hand woven mats (locally called paai) with special kind of grass known as korai. Instead of their main purpose as floor spreads, these mats can be used as table spreads, door and window curtains. Some of these mats can be folded like cloth. Pathamadai is the birth place of Swami Sivanantha, the Saint and Philosopher of Rishikesh.

Deivacheyalpuram  
Deivacheyalpuram is a small village located 27 km from Tirunelveli enroute to Thoothukudi. The village is famous for the two temple namely Sri Rajarajeswari temple and Ram temple. Special poojas are performed in these temples on every Fridays and on festival occasions. In the Ram temple premises, a 75 feet statue of Lord Anjaneya (Hanuman) has been erected to attain world peace.

Mukkudal
Mukkudal is the panchayat town of Tirunelveli located about 20 km west of the city. It is known as the temple village, renowned for the Muthumalai Amman Temple and Raamaswami kovil Temple. The place is also famous for its beedi industries and tamirabarani river.

Ambasamudram
Ambasamudram, situated about 35Km west of Tirunelveli is one among the five taluk headquarters of the district. The place is famous for a number of tourist attractions including the Manimuthar Dam, Karaiyar dam and Agasthiyar falls. This picturesque town located on the banks of the perennial river Tamirabarani, in the foothills of Western Ghats provides as the main route to reach Papanasam, Manimuthar, Courtallam and Sabarimala devotees. It is one of the perfect and prolific towns of the district famous for its wooden handicrafts named kadasal. Brahmadesam Village, famed for the Kailasanathar Temple is about 4 kms north of Ambasamudram.
