Papanasam
Papanasm is a holy place situated on the western Ghats of Pothigai Hills about
42 km west of Tirunelveli. The natural beauty of this place is enhanced by the
Agasthiyar falls by which the Tamparani river descends into the plains. The
water drops from a height of 100m over a wall of rock is covered on both sides
by forested hills of the Western Ghats. The water here is believed to wash away
all sins and there is a legend associated with the falls. According to that,
Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati appeared before the great saint Agasthiya on
the banks of the Tamirabarani river. A temple named Papavinaswehwara temple
is situated near the waterfall which was built in memory of the God's visit.
One can reach the Agasthiyar Falls and the temple by trekking a distance
of 3 kms.
Manimuthar
Dam
Located 47 kms away from the Tirunelveli and 5kms from Papanasam water falls
(Agasthiyar fall), Manimuthar Dam is an ideal picnic spot blessed with beautiful
garden and peaceful atmosphere. The river Manimuthar that arises from the dense
forest a top Senkutheri in Ambasamudram taluk at the height of about 1300 m
is a major tributary of the Tamiraparani.
Courtallam
Courtallam (Kuttralam)
also known as the 'Spa of the South' is a summer resort situated at an altitude
of about 167 meter in on the Western Ghats at a distance of 59kms from the city.
Sharing the boundary with Kollam district in Kerala, it is the main tourist
destination of Tirunelveli. The waters of Courtallam is believed to have medicinal
qualities as it flows through a forests of herbs. The falls which attracts large
number of visitors are :
Main Falls (Peraruvi); Small Falls (Chitraruvi); Shenbagadevi falls (not
safe to take bath); Honey Falls (Thenaruvi) ; Five Falls (Aindharuvi); Tiger
Falls(Puli Aruvi); Old Falls (Pazhaya Courtallaruvi); New Falls (Puthu Aruvi);
Fruit Garden Falls (Pazhathotta Aruvi).
The ideal season for viewing the falls is from June to late August during the
monsoon. A guest house and a number of medium range hotels are available for

Upper Kodaiyar
The beautiful hill station of Upper Koodaiyar at an altitude of 6000 ft above
sea level is located on the Southern most tip of the Western Ghats, about 59
kms from Tirunelveli. Noted for its panoramic views, this area surrounded by
verdant forests is full of rubber, cardamom and tea plantations. The major attraction
of Upper Kodaiyar are the summer resort Manjolai, Kalachi, Nalumukku, Kuthiraiyerri
and Oothu. Upper Kodaiyar can be reached through the road from Balmore and lower
Kodaiyar by winch.
Manjolai
Manjolai is a perfect summer resort located near Upper Kodaiyar, about 57 km
from Tirunelveli. Preached at an altitude of 1162 sq. meter, this beautiful
picnic spot is blessed with scenic beauty, good climate and peaceful atmosphere.
There is a guest house named Muthukuzhi Vayal which belongs to the Travancore
. On the way to Manjolai from Manimuthar, there is a beautiful spot called Dasan
Pool with plenty of fresh water.
