| Known as Manchester of South India, Coimbatore alias
Kovai, situated on the banks of Noyyal River is the third largest city
in Tamil Nadu. Located at an elevation of about 398 meters at the foot
hills of Nilgiris, the city has a pleasant climate, peaceful atmosphere,
cosmopolitan outlook and private enterprise. Due to this salubrious
climate through out the year, it is termed as poor man's Ooty. The city
derived its name from its local Goddess Koniyamman also known as Koniyattamuttur
or Koniyamuttur that is metamorphosed to Koyamuttur and later anglicized
as Coimbatore. Other version says that the area was once ruled by a king
named Kovan and hence the name Kovanputur (Kovan's city). Coimbatore is
also known for the manufacture of motor pumb sets, varied engineering
goods and handloom products. A large number of technical institutions
in Coimbatore cater to the growing technical needs of the region. This
administrative head quarters of Coimbatore district and the textile capital
of South India is now becoming the hub of Information Technology.
