Govind Dev Ji Temple, dedicated to Lord Krishna in the form of Govindevji,
is located between the Chandra Mahal and the Badal Mahal in the city palace
complex. This magnificent seven storeyed structure built with red sandstone
is a beautiful amalgamation of Western, Hindu and Muslim style of architecture.
It consists of an open pillared porch and a slightly tired courtyard surrounded
by a low barrier. One can enter the temple through the Sireh Dheodi entrance
or from the route of Chaugan Stadium and Janta Bazar.
This well preserved temple stands for the royal past of Jaipur and the
idol of the chief deity Govind Dev Ji is said to have been brought from
Vrindavan and was installed here by Raja Sawai Jai Singh in the 18th century.
After the demise of Raja Sawai Jai Singh, Raja Man Singh, celebrated general
of great Mughal emperor Akbar took the initiative to build the temple
in 1890. The idol of the lord known as 'Bajrakrit', kept inside the sanctum,
was believed to be created by the great grand son of Lord Shri Krishna,
Bajranabh. According to the description given by his grand mother, he
had created three images of which the third one has got the correct figure
of Lord Shri Krishna. An idol of his consort Radha is also placed near
the deity. The images of Govind Devji and Radhikaji are black in colour
and decorated with gold ornaments.
Aartis (prayers) and bhog (food) are offered to the deities of Radha-
Krishna at seven different times of the day. Every time, when these rituals
are performed, the idols are unveiled to the devotees and are dressed
up in different styles. Large number of devotees gathered here to have
the darshan of the deities, specially on the 'Janmashtmi' (the main festival
of the temple), to commemorate the birth of Lord Krishna. This holy and
colourful occasion is celebrated with full of enthusiasm and various religious
programmes are also conducted.
