Albert Hall Museum also known as Central Museum, built in 1876 by Maharaja
Pratap Singh II to commemorate the visit of the Prince Albert of Wales
is located in the middle of Ram Niwas Garden of Jaipur. Named after the
prince, this Indo-Saracenic style edifice with sandstone and marble, designed
by Colonel Sir Swinton Jacob, resembles the Victoria and Albert Museum
in London. The museum is supposed to be the oldest museum of the state
which was opened to the public in 1886.
One of the galleries is adorned with jewelry and dresses of the Rajputs
and all sections of the society of Rajasthan including the tribal. Mehndi
Mandana gallery, dedicated entirely to the well known henna body art of
Rajasthan, exhibits typical Rajasthani motifs and designs. Another gallery
is occupied with puppets and a phad painting which portray the life of
Pabuji Rathore, a great folk-hero from Marwar is exhibited. The central
gallery in the museum depicts the figures of Rajasthani music and dance.
The durbar hall has several stunning carpets including the magnificent
Persian Garden Carpet and the Egyptian mummy belongs to Ptolemaic period.
This Persian garden carpet with gushing streams represents the garden
of paradise and was bought by Mirza Raja Jai Singh I from Shah Abbas of
Persia. An exhibition of dolls and toys from different countries in their
traditional attires adorns the dolls gallery.
The galleries in the first floor is beautifully decorated with miniature
paintings from the painting schools of Udaipur, Jaipur, Bundi, Kota and
Kishangarh; arts and crafts works like models of woodwork, metal works;
various pottery objects, painting and sculptures, ivory carvings, cane
wood articles and so on. Other exhibits in the museum include various
musical instruments used in the ancient period, specimens like a horse
skeleton, a human skeleton, and a stuffed cobra etc. The working hours
of the museum is from 10.30 a.m to 4.30 p.m and is closed on Fridays.
