Derived its named from the sacred Hindu symbol 'Om', Omkareshwar is a
holy town located 77kms from Indore, on the confluence of the rivers Narmada
and Kaveri. Lot of Hindu and Jain temples can be found on this Om shaped
island which is almost 2kms long and 1km wide. The most important
among them is the sacred Sri Omkareshwar Mahadeo Temple that enshrines
the 'Jyotirlingam', one of the 12 jyotirlingams of India. Known as the
lingam of light, Jyotirlingam is said to derive currents of power from
within itself and devotees kneel before it to be blessed. The temple,
built in the Nagara style with a local soft stone without using cement,
has decorated front chamber with detailed carvings, wonderful wall paintings,
intricately carved stone roof and verandahs with columns which are carved
in circles, polygons and squares that encircles the shrine. A huge fair
is organized here on the day of Kartik Poornima.
Other nearby attractions here are Siddhnath Temple, Temple of Gauri Somnath,
the 24 Avatars which a cluster of Hindu and Jain temples, 10th century
Satmatrika Temples and the Kajal Rani Cave.
