Covering an area of 320 sq kms, Tansa Wild life Sanctuary located in Thane
district comprises the area of Wada, Shahapur and Mokhada Talukas. The
sanctuary is the home to many rare and endangered species of flora and
fauna. Around 200 species of birds and 50 species of animals such as panther,
barking deer, mouse deer, hyena, wild boar, sambars, jackal, tiger, cheetas
etc. can be found here. The vegetation consists of species of trees
such as teak, hed, khair, bibla, ain, kalamb, bamboo, etc. Tansa Lake
which flows through the sanctuary is a main source of water to wild life
in the sanctuary. Mahadeo Temple located at Tilsa, Mahuli fort and Plateau
of Suryamal are the nearby attractions.
Accommodation facilities are available near the sanctuary and also at
the forest rest house located in the Suryamal Area of Shahapur District.
But these has to be reserved prior to the visit and it can be done through
the Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) Wildlife located at Thane. The
sanctuary is at a distance of 90kms from Mumbai and the best time to visit
is from November -May.
