Prince of Wales Museum)
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya formerly known as the Prince
of Wales Museum is one of
the most interesting museums of India located on the Crescent site on the way
to the gateway Of India in South Mumbai. It was built to commemorate King George
V's first visit to India in 1905 and opened to the public in 1922. Designed
by George Wittet in grant Indo-Saracenic style, the museum is set in an ornamental
garden and boasts an impressive galleried central hall topped by a huge dome.
This museum is divided into three
floors with several galleries: art, archaeology, maritime, natural history etc. The ground floor gallery has
a sculptures section and the natural history section. The natural history
section has a large selection of Indian birds, snakes and stuffed animals ranging from rhinos to monkeys and lions to deer.
The ground floor gallery has artifacts from Elephanta
Island
and Jogeshwari Caves. Other collections include terracotta figurines from the Indus Valley, ivory carvings,
Chinese and Japanese art, portrait of Abraham Lincoln, and an excellent
collection of Indian miniature paintings etc. In 1990 the museum was awarded
Urban Heritage Award of the Bombay Chapter of the Indian Heritage Society.
The
museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10.15 am to 6 pm. Entry fee - Rs.5

Dr. Bhau Daji Lad
Museum
Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum earlier known as the Victoria & Albert Museum,
is located in the Veermata Jijabai Bhonsle Udyan Botanical garden north of the city
centre. Founded in 1872, it is housed in a fine Italian Renaissance-style building
with ornate pillars, a decorative ceiling, ironwork balconies and Minton stair
tiles. The ground floor contains a collection of bronze sculptures, metal ware,
fossils and model ships etc. First floor relate to the city's past which include
old maps of Mumbai dating back to the 17th century and model relief, photos
and biographies of the city's leading historic figures. This museum owned and
run by the Mumbai Municipal Corporation is open
daily except Wednesdays from 10.30am to 4.30pm. Address: Near Byculla Station,

Nehru Museum
This Cylindrical shaped building, includes a planetarium, art gallery,
restaurant, library, cultural center and a 14-gallery exhibit called
Discovery of India. There are antique exhibits like a railway engine, tramcar,
supersonic airplane and steam lorry. It is also a venue of numerous
international trade fairs and local exhibitions. The discovery of India expo is
open daily except Monday from 10.30am to 5pm. Entry is free.

Mani Bhavan
Mani Bhavan is located at 19 Laburnum Road, near August Kranti Maidan. This
was the building where Mahatma Gandhi stayed during his frequent visits to Bombay
from 1917-1934. It is a charming, three-story Gujarati house, painted brown
and yellow, now turned into a museum. The place acts as a research institute
in Gandhian thought & Rural Development by the Mumbai University. The museum
contains a reference library of over 2000 books, a photo collection of his life
and many well-preserved memorabilia including the famous spinning wheel (charkha).
It is open daily from 9.30am to 6pm.
