Vadakkunnatha temple 
Vadakkumnathan temple, one of the oldest temples in the state, is the central attraction of the city. The temple is a classical example of Kerala style architecture and has many decorative murals and pieces of art. Thekkinkadu Maidan (ground) surrounding the temple is the venue of the world famous Pooram festival celebrated annually in April -May every year. Non-Hindus are not permitted inside the temple premises except during the Pooram festival. In addition to its religious function, the temple used to be a center for extensive administration with legal and tax raising powers. The temple is also known as 'Rishabhari' or 'Thenkailasam' ( the Kailash of the south). It is open from 4.00 am to 10.30 am and 5.00 pm to 8.30 pm. Read more >>>.

Sri Krishna Temple at Guruvayur
Situated 33km north of Thrissur, Guruvayur is one of the most sacred and important pilgrim centers of Kerala. The Centuries old Sree Krishna temple or the Guruvayoor temple lies here. This historic temple shrouded in mystery, is believed to be the creation of Guru, the preceptor of the Devas and Vayu. The notable features are the 33.5 mt high gold plated 'Dwajasthambam' (flag post) in the 'Chutambalam' or outer enclosure, and the 7mt high 'Dipastambham' (pillar of lamps) whose thirteen circular receptacles provide a truly gorgeous spectacle when lit. The square 'Sreekovil' is the sacred sanctum sanctorum of the temple which houses the main deity. Only Hindus are allowed inside the temple. An unusual feature of the temple at Guruvayoor is the timing of the rituals. The sanctum opens at 0300 am and closes at 1300 during which a continuous series of pujas and processions are held. The Darshanam at 0300 is believed to be particularly auspicious. The main festival (Utsavam) of the temple is held during Feb/ March. The other festivals celebrated at the temple are Vishukkani (April), Ashtami Rohini (August/September), Ekadasi (November/December) etc.  Read more >>>

Arattupuzha temple
Aarattupuzha temple alias Ayyappa temple, located around 14 km from Thrissur, is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa also known as Dharma Sastha. The ancient temple about thousand years old is famous for its annual festival Arattupuzha Pooram Festival held in March - April. Nearly forty one neighboring temples participate in this colourful festival. The uniqueness of the festival is the ceremonial procession of deities from these neighboring temple on caparisoned elephants. Arattupuzha temple is open from 05:00 to 09:30 am and 05:00 - 07:00 pm.

Koodalmanikyam Temple
Koodalmanikyam Temple dedicated to Lord Bharatha- brother of Sree Rama, is located at Irinjalakuda, about 23km south west of Thrissur and 10 km from Irinjalakuda railway station. It is said to be the only temple in India dedicated to Lord Bharata. The temple surrounded by four ponds, is an architectural marvel with remarkable gateways, 'Koothambalam', murals on the 'Chuttambalam' (outer enclosure) and its round shaped Sanctum Sactorum. A distinctive feature of Koodalmanikyam temple is that there is only one single 'Prathista' (diety) here- 'Dhanwanthara Moorthy' famed for curing even fatal diseases of faithful devotees. Daily ritual of the temple include three poojas, and only lotus, chethi and tulasi flowers are used for offering and making garlands. Another peculiarity of the temple is the offering of 'brinjal nivedyam' that is believed to be very effective to cure stomachache. Thriputhari (the day of feasting) on the Thiruvonam day observed in the month of Thulam (October-November) is an important occasion in the Temple. On that day newly harvested rice is first cooked and offered to the deity and then distributed among the devotees. The annual festival of the temple is celebrated for eleven days in April-may. 'Brahmakalasam' strictly following the Vedic and Tantric rituals are offered to the deity for the 11 days during the Festival. The temple timings are from 3.00 am to 11.30 am and 5.00 pm to 8.15 pm. There is a unique Four temple pilgrimage conducted during the Malayalam month of Karkidakam (August) called 'Nalanbalam Yathra' which involves visiting the four temples dedicated to Rama( Sreerama Temple at Triprayar), Bharata (Koodalmanickam temple), Lakshmana (Lakshmana temple at Moozhikkulam, Ernakulam District) and Sathrukhna (Payammel  temple near Irinjalakuda).

Thriprayar Temple 
This temple dedicated to Lord Shri Rama at Tripayar lies 22 Kms from Thrissur. There are beautiful wood carvings, sculptures and ancient murals here. Thriprayar Ekadasi held for three days in the Malayalam month of Vrichikam (Nov-Dec) is the main festival here. This is one among the Nalambalam (four temples) pilgrimage undertaken during the Malayalam month Karkidakam by devotees. The other temples being Koodalmanikyam, Payemmel and Moozhikulam. Offering timings - 4.30 am to 12.30 pm, 4.30 pm to 8 pm.

Marthoma Pontifical Shrine    
The Mar Thoma Pontifical Shrine, a monument dedicated to St. Thomas is situated at Marthoma Nagar, Azhikode, Kodungallur, 40 kms from Trichur town. Built in the model of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, this shrine is a historic pilgrim centre of the Indian Christians, situated on the beautiful banks of the river Periyar. Read More>>>

 

 

Shrine Basilica of Our lady of Dolours
Believed to be the biggest and tallest church in Asia, Shrine Basilica of Our lady of Dolours is of 25,000 square feet area. Built in Indo- Gothic style, the church also known as 'Puthan Pally' ( new church) is situated in the heart of the city at a distance of 1km. from the center. Consecrated in the year1940, the church was elevated to the status of a Minor Basilica in 1992. The notable feature here is the 260 feet high Bible tower at the rear of the church. Blessed in 2004, this tower depicts the whole life of Jesus and is the first Christian art gallery in Kerala. Visitors get a panoramic view of Thrissur city from the top of the tower. Working hours of the bible tower is from 10 am to 6 pm, from Tuesday to Friday and from 10 a.m. to 7.30 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. The tower remains closed on Mondays.

Apart from the bible tower there are other two bell towers in front of the church each measuring 140 feet. The interior of the church is decorated with fine specimens of mural paintings, images of saints and scenes from the scriptures. The floor of the Church is paved with mosaic bricks and the whole church is gorgeously illuminated with varied varieties of electric lamps. There is a majestic array of 10 alters, adjacent to the main alter which is about 100 feet high. The Septic-cell model cemetery beneath the northern side of the rear of the church, is considered the largest of its kind in India.

Palayur Church
Palayur Church one of the ancient churches in Kerala, is one among the seven churches established by the Apostle, St. Thomas. It is at Chavakkad, 25 km from Thrissur along the Thrissur-Guruvayoor route. This Catholic Syrian church has a unique architectural style and is noted for its portrayal of St. Thomas’ illustrious life. The entrance of the church is decorated with 14 granite life-size statues of various scenes from the life of St. Thomas, and there is also a silver statue of the saint on the roof. 'Palayur Mahatheerthadanam', is the main pilgrimage to this church when devotees would walk all the way from Thrissur to Palayur church carrying wooden crosses. Muppittu Njayar, Thukharana Thirunal and Tharpana Thirunal are the other events celebrated by the devotees in this church.

The Lourdes Church   
Located in the heart of the city, the Lourdes Church with an Indo- European facade is one of the largest churches in India. The cathedral which was established in 1887, has an interesting underground shrine that is rich in architectural design.

St.Thomas Church, Aranattukara
St. Thomas Church located at Aranattukara, a small suburb of Thrissur is famous for its Aranuttakara Perunnal held on the first Sunday of the year annually. This church was built when a Statue of St Sebastin was found by the the boatmen who were on the trip to Kochi for their supplies.
