The most colourful temple festival of Kerala, Thrissur Pooram attracts
large masses of devotees and spectators from all parts of the State and
even outside. Pooram celebrated during the Malayalam month Medam
(April/ May), is a grand eight day festival with elephants, parasols,
fire works and drumming. It is marked by a huge, colourful procession
partaken by people of all religious communities irrespective of caste.
Elaborately bedecked elephants proceed to the Vadakunnathan Temple carrying
the deities, to the accompaniment of extra ordinary drumming. On the final
day, the temple team meet on the Tekkinkadu Maidan (ground)surrounding
the Vadakunnathan Temple, for the drumming and kudamattam competition.
The festival terminates with a huge display of fireworks.
