Mananchira Square
Opened in 1994, Mananchira Square is a vast open ground located in the heart of
the city. In fact, the city of Kozhikode is marked by Mananchira. It was once
the main courtyard of the Zamorin's palace. The main attraction here is a large
pond and a park. The place is named after this pond of the palace of the erstwhile
Zamorin ruler, King Mana Vikrama, known as Mana-Devan's Chira (Pond) which was
later changed to Mananchira.
Supervised by the City Corporation, the park has meticulously landscaped lawns
with trees, plants, an artificial stream and hill, sculptures and an open-air
theater. The entire maithan is lined by 250 lampposts designed in colonial style,
each post with a pair of lamps. The musical fountain inside the maidan and the
beautiful lawn surrounded by traditional Kerala style buildings fascinate visitors.
Commonwealth Trust Office, one of the city's oldest organisation and major establishments
such as the Town hall, Lalitakala Academy hall, public library, Jama'atpalli
mosque and Muchhandipalli mosque are situated around the square.
Regional Science
Centre
Located within the city center at Jafferkhan Colony on Indira Gandhi Road,
Regional Science center consists of a science park, a planetarium and an aquarium.
The Science Park abound with puzzles and wonders of astonishing
dimensions and take children to the new world of science. Floating balls that
performs acrobatics by moving in a tortuous path, murmurings being carried from
one end to another with the help of parabolic reflectors are some of the wonders
here. The park contains nearly 50 exhibits which includes huge working models
of bisects.
The planetariumlocated in the Science center complex with a
seating capacity of 250, reveals mysteries of the universe, planets and galaxies.
It has a complicated Zeiss projector that is used for the shows. The daily timings
of the shows are 12.00, 2.00, 4.00 and 6.00 p.m.
Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary
Situated 19 km away from the city, Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is one of the
most attractive bird sanctuaries in Kerala. Covering an area of 3 square kms,
the estuary at Kadalundi spread over a cluster of islands in Kadalundi river
is a heaven for migratory birds. It is home to 100 species of native birds and
over 60 varieties of migratory birds. Terns, gulls, herons, sandpipers, whimbrels
and other exotic birds flock into this place in November and returns home only
by the end of April. Woodpecker, black bulbul, jungle fowl, laughing thrush,
myna, kingfisher and peafowl are some of the other inhabitants here. The sanctuary
has adopted many scientific methods to avoid harm to these birds and their homes. The
best time to visit this remarkable place is in the early hours of the days,
from December to April. One could also find various species of snakes such as
Cobra, Krait, and Viper etc.
Kadalundi river that flows into the Arabian Sea is known for the wide variety
of fish, mussels and crabs. The place locally called as Kadalundi Nagaram, is
a scenic area surrounded by hillocks. One of the hills, 200 m above sea level,
provides a splendid view of the river mouth and the sea.
Kalipoika
Kalipoika is a boating place located 2km from the city. One can leisurely cruise
the waters in both pedal and row boats. The place is open from 08.00 am -07.00
pm
Beypore
Beypore
is a coastal town located at the mouth of Chaliyar River located around 10 km
south of Kozhikode. Earlier known as Vaypura and Vadaparappanad, it was also
named as Sulthan Pattanam by Tippu Sulthan. During the days of the early Arab
and Chinese travelers, Beypore held a special place as one of the prominent
ports and fishing harbours and an important trade and maritime centre.
Ancient Beypore was much sought after by merchants from Western Asia, for its
shipbuilding industry. The boat building yard here, famous for the construction
of the Uru (the Arabian trading vessel), boasts a tradition of almost 1500 years.
The age old knowledge of building these country ships is possessed by a selective
group of traditional craftsmen called 'Khalasis'. Arabs used to buy these
teak wooden ships which were in huge demand earlier and even today.
Thikkoti Light House
The 33.5m high light house, erected in 1847, is situated in Thikodi, 30
km away from Kozhikode city. The lighthouse which overlooks the massive rock,
Velliyamkallu off Moodadi coast was built after a shipwreck, the remains of
which can still be seen here. The region around the Velliyamkallu rock is the
transit home of migratory birds. Climbing the winding stairs of the light house
is an amazing experience and the view of the Arabian Sea from the top is awesome.
Permission is needed to go on top of the lighthouse.
Nadappuram
Nadappuram, at a distance of 18kms north east of Vadakara is an important center
to the Islamic culture but second only to Ponnanii.
