Kakkayam
The picturesque dam site, Kakkayam situated 45km away from Kozhikode is a perfect place for trekking and rock climbing. Nestled between the Southern Ghats, the place with lush greenery and abundant wild life, provides stunning views. The eye-catching Urakkuzhi (oorakuzhi) waterfall is the major attraction. The ideal time to visit this place is between November and April. 

Vellari Mala
Vellari Mala also known as Camel's Hump Mountains, located at an attitude of 2,240 metres is a perfect place for adventure lovers. Scintillating waterfalls and velvet green landscapes make this beautiful place, an ideal spot for trekking. Trekking to Vellari Mala starts from Muthappanpuzha, 3kms from Anakkampoyil, which is about 50 km from Kozhikode. It will take one full day to climb this peak and one could return only on the next day. As the route to this peak is hazardous, it is unsafe to go without a guide.

At a distance of about 6 kms from Muthappanpuzha on the way to Vellari Mala, there is a beautiful stream of frothing water gliding down a huge inclined hill called Olichuchattam. Before reaching the top of the peak, one can see several other water streams on the way. Right on top of Vellarimala there is an open space in the middle of a jungle. A good place for camping at the top is Masthakappara and on the way, one can see the Vavul peak at a height of 2339 m above sea level, which is the tallest in the Western ghats to the north of Nilgiris.

Regular KSRTC buses from Kozhikode will take 2 hours to reach Anakkampoyil. 

Peruvannamuzhi
Situated at a distance of 60kms from Kozhikode, Peruvannamuzhi dam site is a beautiful picnic spot set in the midst of hills. The height of the dam project is 35 m and the length is 175km. The reservoir serves as the drinking water source of three taluks Kozhikode, Quilandy and Vadakara. It also provides facilities for speedboat and rowboat cruises. There is a garden known as ‘Smaraka thottam’ that has been built in memory of the freedom fighters in this area. Other attractions of Peruvannamuzhi is the uninhabited islands here with a bird sanctuary, and a crocodile farm which houses around 15 crocodiles. Both are open for the tourist from 9 am to 6 pm.

One could directly reach Peruvannamuzhi by getting on to buses running between Kozhikode and Peruvannamuzhi. There are regular buses from Perambra to Peruvannamuzhi dam.

Vadakara
Vadakara or Badakara, formerly known as Vadakkekara (north shore) because of its position on the shores of the Kotakkal river ( Moorad river or Kuttiadi river), is a small coastal town located 48 km north of Kozhikode. It was the capital of old Kurumbranadu that was inhabited by the Kurumbrar tribal folk.

Vadakara is famous as the birth place of Thacholi Othenan, the legendary hero of the ballads of North Malabar (Vadakkan pattukal). The Thacholi Tharavadu and Thacholi Manikkoth, the kalari where Thacholi Othenan practiced his martial feats and spent long days in deep meditation are places worth visiting. Kottakkal which was the birth place of Kunjali Marakkar, the admiral of the Zamorins who had resisted the Portuguese, is also at Vadakara. A small hut that belonged to Kunhali Marakkar with collections of ancient swords, canon balls and knives can be seen here.

Kottakkal Bhagavathy temple, renowned for its Thera festival is in the heart of the town. The spiritual center, Sidhasramam that has many branches in and out side Kerala is also located at here. The famous Lokanarkavu temple dedicated to Goddess Durga is located 4 km away from Vadakara.

Wayanad
Wayanad, the hill station located in the northeast tilt of Kerala at a distance of 76kms from Kozhikode, is a favourite tourist spot of both locals and tourists. Carved out of Kozhikode and Kannur, Wayanad was formed as an independent district on November 1st, 1980. The name Wayanad has been derived from the word ‘Vayal Nadu’ which means the village of paddy fields. The place is known for its spices, especially pepper. Almost all crops like coffee, ginger, cocoa, areca nut, tea, rubber, vanilla etc grows here. Notable tourist spots in Wayanad include Kalpetta, Sultan Bathery, Vythiri, Mananthavady, Ambalavayal, Wayanad Wildlife sanctuary, Muthanga, Lakkidi, Kuruva Island etc. Waterfalls namely Meenmutty, Suchipara and Kanthampara falls, and the famous Thirunelli Vishnu Temple are located here. Edakkal caves and Pookodu Lake are the other attractive tourist spots in Wayanad. Kalpetta, one of the major Jain centers in Kerala, is the district headquarters.

Public buses as well as private buses help one to reach Wayanad.

Wayanad Ghat
The 14kms long Wayand Ghat enroute to Wayanad, bordering the district, is 44 kms from Kozhikode. The green ghats has nine hairpin bends, each turn taking one to a higher altitude offering a better view of the picturesque plains below. The route developed by the British was once the haven of tribals. The thick forests surrounding the ghat is called the 'Chirapunchi of Kerala' for the heavy rainfall experienced in the area.

Kalaman Para Maruthilavu, Kakkad Eco Tourism Centre and Kolamala Eco Tourism are some of the places of tourist interest along the Kozhikode –Wayanad National highways.
