Mosques

Jama Masjid
Located at Kuttichira, Jum-a Masjid locally known as Jama palli dates back to 14th century. This mosque is raised on a stepped pedestal and is enclosed by masonry walls and the entrance has slanting roofs. This single storied mosque has a largest floor area and could accommodate around 1000 worshippers at a time. The ceilings are adorned with complex wood carvings which resembles the ancient Kerala temple architectural style. The wooden walls inside the mosque are engraved with verses from sacred Arabic texts. In the month of April, a Nercha festival is celebrated here for four days. Tomb of The Malappuram Shaheed, whose brave exploits have been immortalized in the Mappila ballads, is located adjacent to this mosque.

Mucchandi Palli
Known also as Muccunti Mosque, Mucchandi Mosque situated at Kuttichira is constructed in the traditional temple style of architecture. The mosque stands on a 1.5m high plinth and has a semi circular prayer niche, mihrab. One among the oldest temple, this mosque tells the history of Zamorins through its 13-century inscription called Vattezhuthu.

Mishkal Masjid
One of the largest mosques in Kozhikode, Mishkal Masjid (also spells as Mithqal) alias Mithqalpalli is named after its founder Nakhuda Mithqali, who was a local trader in the 14th century, during the time of Ibn Battuta. Located two kilometers from the city at the back of Kuttichira tank, it is the oldest mosques in Malabar. This four storeyed structure supported by 24 wooden pillars was built over 700 years ago and proudly proclaims the architectural splendour of yester years. Though the Portuguese burnt the mosque in 1510, it was reconstructed later in 1578, but one could still see the burnt portions. Mithqal mosque is a symbol of peace and unity as one could enter here despite of his caste and social status.
