Forts - Bekal Fort | Hosdurg Fort | Chandragiri Fort

Bekal Fort
Bekal fort, the largest and the best-preserved fort in Kerala, lies round 16 kms south of Kasaragod on the national highway at the northern tip of the state. Believed to have been built by Sivappa Naik of the Ikkeri dynasty in the 1650's, the fort is a circular imposing structure of literate rising 130 ft. above sea level and it stands on a 35 acre headland that runs into the Arabian sea. The observation tower of the fort offers a bird’s eye view of the unspoiled beach and the vast expanse of sea stretching into the far horizon. At the entrance of the fort, there is a temple devoted to Lord Hanuman (Anjaneya) and there is also an old mosque believed to have been built by Tipu Sultan. The fort and its surroundings is a favourite shooting locale for film makers and it is fast emerging as an international tourist destination. Hosdurg Fort
Hosdurg Fort alias Kanhangad fort is an imposing structure located 4km east of Kanhangad town which is around 23kms and 15kms south east of Kasargod town and Bekal fort respectively. Believed to be built by Somasekhara Nayak of Ikkeri dynasty, the fort is surrounded by a high brick wall with round bastions. Although only the ruins of the old fort remain, the legacy of the fort town endures to this day. Within the fort premises, there are several public offices and a temple called Karpooreshwara Temple devoted to Lord Shiva. The internationally recognised spiritual centre, 'Nithyanandashram' is situated on the outskirts of the fort, around 4kms away.

Chandragiri Fort
Situated at a distance of 4kms south east of Kasargod near the confluence of the Payaswini (Chandragiri) river and the Arabian sea is the Chandragiri village, renowned for the fort in its name, atop a small hill. This large 17th century Chandragiri Fort is said to have been built by Sivappa Naik of Bedanor as one of a chain of forts, but now only the ruins of the fort are left. The fort and its surroundings is a place of immense importance to archaeology and history students. Kizhur Sastha Temple, known for its annual festival called 'Pattu Utsavam' and a mosque is located nearby the fort.
