Bharani Maholsavam
Bharani Maholsavam is the major festival celebrated in Palakkunnu Bhagavathy Temple, Trikkanad. Held during the Bharani asterism that falls in the month of March, the festival commence the very next day of the Arattu festival of Trikkannad Temple, located just 1kms from here. The dhwajarohanam (hosting the flag) at Palakkunnu temple is done with the same rope which is used for the dhwajarohanam at Trikkannad temple. During the festival days, all the deities from the nearby temple are taken in a grand procession called Kazhcha. After the end of Kazhcha and offerings at the temple, there will be a splendid display of fire works which lasts for hours.

Sarvajanika Ganeshotsavam
The annual Sarvajanika Ganeshotsavam at Kasargod town is celebrated in connection with Ganesh Chathurthi. Held under the banner of Sarvajanika Ganeshotsava Samithi, this festival falls during September continues for 5 to 7 days. The residents of the coastal areas of Kasargod are ardent devotees of Lord Ganesha and hence a number of temples have been built for the deity all along the coastline. A huge clay idol of the lord is worshiped throughout the festive days and special poojas are conducted in connection with the festival. On the last day, a procession is carried out through the town with the idol and it is immersed in the temple tank. Observed with huge enthusiasm, Ganeshotsavam attracts thousands of devotees and the day has been declared as a public holiday in Kasargod.

Buffalo Race
Buffalo race is a popular rural sport, celebrated as a grant event in the northern parts of Kasargod, specially in the regions of Kumbla and Manjeswar. Once a part of Tulunadu culture, the race which coincides with the starting of agricultural activities, declares the glorious significance of soaring and harvesting. Held annual during the month of November and December on almost every Saturday and Sunday, it draws huge spectators.

Buffalo races are held in a large muddy fields, usually having a length of 500 to 100 feet and a breadth of 20 to 50 feet known as Kanbalam. Strong and fatty bull or buffaloes, specially bred for this purpose are brought to these Kanbalams. These majestic and graceful animals exhibit their brutal strength and speed when aroused by the skillful riders. There are two types of races. In the first type, a pair of buffaloes are tied to the yoke which is connected to a wooden plank by a long wooden pole having a hole in the center. These wooden plank touches the muddy ground in a slight angle and this enables the rider to stand on it. While riding, the rider keeps his balance by clutching the tales of the buffullos and the muddy water splashes through the hole in the wooden pole. The speed is measured by computing the height reached by the splash. In the second type, the pairs of buffaloes are tied only with the yoke. The rider has to run after the buffaloes and the winner are selected by their speed with the use of a stop-watch.

Cock Fight
Cock fights, popularly known as kozhi kettu is an ancient rural sport held as a ritual at the temple precincts in the northern parts of Kasargod. It is a blood sport between two specially trained fighter cocks owned by two individuals. These cocks have great vigour and stamina and they exhibit formidable courage during the fight which is usually held in a ring called cockpit. A sharp edged weapon like blade or knives is attached to one of the legs of the fighter cocks. The fighter bird rises high and tries to kick the enemy bird. The cock fight may often end when one of the birds gets seriously injured or dead. The owner of the successful cock is entitled to get the defeated or killed cock. If both cocks are killed in the fight the owners used to exchange the dead birds. The cock fight is associated with the tradition of offering cock blood to the Theyyam Gods which is believed to protect the family members.

Usually women are not allowed to watch this sport. As people have started misusing the traditions and started gambling on this ritual, the cock fights has been legally forbidden. But it is conducting secretly in several places.
