Karwar beach
Also known as the Devbagh beach or the Rabindranatha Tagore beach, this
splendid scenic beach is located 2km from the Karwar railway station. Rabindranath
Tagore, the famous Indian Poet who won the Nobel Prize, stunned by the beauty
of the beach even wrote a poem in praise of it. October to May is the ideal
time to visit the beach and one could enjoy snorkeling and diving here, apart
from tasting the spicy seafood. The 300 year old Venkatrama temple famous for
its ocher coloured paintings, and the octagonal church located at the beach
form its unique features. Tourists could find accommodation in one of the beach
resorts located in and around the place. The beach is at a distance of 100 km
from Goa, 273km from Mangalore, 167 km from Belgaum and 520 km from Bangalore.
Binaga beach
The beautiful beach surrounded by greenery on three sides is located at
Binaga village, 3km away from Karwar city. This risk free beach with its wide
seashore attracts both national and international tourists alike. Our Lady of
St Anne’s Church, the first Latin Catholic Church constructed by the Portuguese
is a landmark of the village. Devbagh and Arga (5 kms) are the other beaches
nearby, while Anjidiv is an island, about a mile from here. The Karwar railway
station is the nearest railway station while Goa is the nearest Airport.
Sadashivgad
The beautiful beach surrounded by greenery on three sides is located at
Binaga village, 3km away from Karwar city. This risk free beach with its wide
seashore attracts both national and international tourists alike. Our Lady of

Kali Nadi (Kali River)
Originating from the Western Ghats, the Kali River flows westward and joins
the Arabian sea near Karwar city. Motor launches are available for boating in
the river. Many dams are built across this river which has the Upper Kaneri
and Tattihalla as its tributaries. Tourists spots like the Sadashivgad fort
and the Ambe Joog Island are located on the banks of the river. The fishermen
of the Karwar coastal area depend on this river for their livelihood.
Dargah of Peer
Shan Shamsuddin Kharobat
Dedicated to Peer Shan Shamsuddin Kharobat, a Baghdadi Saint, this eminent
Dargah is one of the major places of interest for pilgrims.
Kurmagad
Island
Abound with untouched natural beauty, Kurmagad Island is a tortoise-shaped
remote haven located 4 km into the Arabian Sea, off the coast of Karwar. It
houses the ruins of an old historic fort and a Narasimha shrine. It is believed
that the half Lion - half Human deity Lord Narasimha, the reincarnation of Lord
Vishnu, had swam across the sea tearing it apart and came here to make the island
it's habitat. People from Goa and other parts of Karnataka visit here to offer
prayers to Lord Narasimha. A grand annual festival is held here on a full moon
day during the Pushya month i.e in December- January. It is ironic that the
island has a sweet water pond, in spite of the fact that it is located a few
marine miles away from Karwar city.
Tourists can enjoy nature walks, swimming, fishing, bonfires and barbecues,
dolphin spotting, boat rides, aqua sports, rock climbing and more. The island
is only a kilometer from Devbagh Beach and can be easily accessed in a ferry
from Sadhashivgad Boat Jetty. A 20 minute motorboat ride will take one to this
beautiful island. September to March is considered to be the ideal time to visit
the place. There are several resorts available for stay. Top
Karwar port
The Karwar bay, apart from its scenic beauty, also boasts of an excellent
harbour which is fit for use during all seasons. Karwar port with a total length
of 355 meters, located at Baithkul area plays an important role in the sea trade,
fishing and maritime services of India. The port under the administration of
the Government of Karnataka has the declaration from the Central Government
to handle all types of cargo including the B&C class of petroleum products.
Manganese ore is the major commodity that the port handles. A fishing jetty
is attached to the Karwar port.
Muslin Factory
Karwar town is known for its fine muslin. In the 17th century, Portuguese
had considered Karwar as a safe harbor for their trading. In 1638, their rival
English trading body Courteen Association came to Karwar and a muslin factory
was opened by Sir. William Counten. Later Courteen Association united with East
India company and the town became a Company Factory. Karwar was also famous
for its coarse blue cotton cloth, pepper, cassier and cardamom. The Muslin factory,
a part of Karwar history is now a tourist spot visited by many people.
Naganatha
Temple
Nagathana temple, where an anthill is worshipped is a worth visit tourist
place.
Cathedral of the Assumption
of Our Lady
This Roman Catholic Diocese of Karwar was established in the year 1976
in the Karwar city.
