Vadodara is known as the city of festivities and gaiety. Festivals of all religious
communities are celebrated here with equal ardor. Among the Hindu festivals,
Navaratri and Diwali are celebrated with great grandeur.
Navaratri
Navaratri festival held in the months of October- November is one of the times
when people will be out in the streets even in the wee hours. The Goddess Durga
or Shakti is worshipped during this festival. The whole city will be in merriment
with Garba and Ras dance, the popular dance of the state. Many streets have
their own Garba Mandals, or Garba groups. Wearing traditional dress, Garba dance
are performed by all age groups and it continuous till early hours of the morning.
During Navaratri festival, a Bhavai performance is held at the Ambaji temple.
Diwali
The whole city of Vadodara will be decked up in twinkling lights and the noise
of firecrackers during Diwali celebration. Houses are lit up with earthen lamps
and the entrance to each household is marked with beautiful designs made out
of coloured powder called rangolis.
