Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary is a natural lake and bird
sanctuary located about 64km from Ahmedabad. It covers an area of 116sq
km and is a haven for migratory birds during winter months (November to
February). The sanctuary mainly comprises a huge lake and ambient marshes.
Established in 1969, it is the most popular wetland bird sanctuary in
Gujarat. It is also house to certain endangered flora and fauna. 210 species
of birds and few mammalian species including endangered wild ass and black
buck are found in this park. The fauna includes rosy pelicans, flamingoes,
white storks, Brahmany duck from Tibet, Saras cranes, herons, avocets,
curlews, fishing eagles, swallows, osprey, spoonbill etc. The lake is
also populated by migrating Bharwad shepherds and on the banks are Padhars
who are excellent folk dancers, artisans and boatmen. Nalsarovar can be
accessed from Ahmedabad by state and private buses.
