Examination

All eligible candidates will have to appear for a written entrance examination at the Examination Centres opted by them. NIFT entrance test is designed to test the knowledge, skill and aptitude of the candidates for the programme opted.

The objective type tests are not subject to negative marking. The entrance exam consists of General Ability Test (GAT), Creative Ability Test (CAT) and Managerial Ability Test (MAT).

General Ability Test (GAT): This test will comprise of various sub-tests like : 

  • Quantitative Ability - Designed to test the quantitative ability of the candidates.
    For Bachelor programme in Design & Master programme in management - It consists of questions on Addition, Multiplication, Division, Fractions, Percentage, Rate of Interest, Work and Task, Ratio and Proportion, Distance, Profit & Loss, Algebra and Geometry, etc. of the level of matriculation.
    For Bachelor programme in Technology - Consists of questions on Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus, Differential Equations, Probability and Statistics, and Fundamentals of Computer Applications.
    For Master programme in Technology - Consists of questions on Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus, Differential Equations, Probability and Statistics, Linear Programming, Fundamentals of Computer Applications, Production Engineering, etc. of the level of graduation.
  • Communication Ability - This test is aimed at testing the language ability of the candidates in day to day communication in English. It includes questions on synonyms, antonyms, words with corresponding meanings, singular, plural, one word substitutes, idioms and phrases, correct spellings, etc.
  • English Comprehension - This is to test one’s ability to comprehend a situation from a given passage.
  • Analytical Ability - It is designed to test one’s ability to comprehend a situation from a given passage.
  • Business Domain Test (only for Bachelor programme in Design) - This test is aimed to evaluate the candidate's knowledge and awareness about the Fashion Industry, Designers, knowledge in the field of Art & Culture. 
  • General Knowledge and Current Affairs (for bachelors and masters programmes in technology & management programmes) - This test is designed to test the candidates general knowledge and current affairs. 

Creative Ability Test (CAT) : (for Bachelor programme in Design)
This test is administered to judge the skill, power of observation, innovation and design ability of the candidate. An important aspect of the test is the candidate’s usage of colour and illustration.

Managerial Ability Test (MAT) : (for bachelors and masters programmes in technology & management programmes )
It is a test to judge the managerial effectiveness and interpersonal skills of the candidates. This test comprises of various sub tests like :

  • Case Study - It is based on a situation of an industry environment. It helps to evaluate the candidate's managerial ability.
  • Business Domain Test - It is to judge the knowledge of a candidate on fundamentals of textiles, apparel industry, import and export sectors, WTO issues related to textiles, apparel brands, etc. 
  • Logical Ability - It is aimed to evaluate the candidate’s ability to identify the logic or reason involved in a particular problem given and applying the logic in solving the problem. Concepts and practice of creative and lateral thinking are likely to be useful.

The result of the written examination will be displayed at all NIFT Centres and on the NIFT- website. Short listed candidates will also be informed separately by registered post about the dates of subsequent tests. An all India merit list for each programme will be prepared with a cut -off test store of 50% for general and 45% for reserved categories.
