Daman
Daman lies 193kms north of Bombay on the coast of the southern edge of Gujarat
just north of Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Nani Daman
Somanath Mahadev Temple
The Somanath Mahadev Temple is an important place of worship in Daman.
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is situated in the village Dabhel. It
is believed that the Shivalinga miraculously originated at its present place
on the request of a monk who was a true devotee of Shiva. This miraculous
incident is believed to have taken place in the19th century, which induced
people to hold this place as holy place and they built a small temple. It was
rebuilt in the year 1972-73 with glass decorative. It is a pleasant spot
connected by good roads. Every year there is a fair organised here known as 'Gangaji Fair'.
Devka Beach
Devka beach is 5kms away from the town. The long stretch of
beach attracts tourists and locals. There is an amusement park with a musical
fountain and facilities for pony rides on the beach. Swimming is generally safe,
but those who are unfamiliar with the place should note that there are rough
rocky formations beneath the water level. Food, accommodation and transport
facilities are available at walking distance.
Jampore Beach
This serene beach is lined by casuarina plantation, and on
low tides one can walk right into the sea. This is a danger free zone safe for
swimming. Towards the south of the beach is the border of Gujarat. The beach is
6 kms away from Nani Daman and 5kms from Moti Daman jetty.
Nani Daman jetty garden
Located on the banks of the Damanganga river (which
divides Daman into two parts), this beautiful garden offers several fun
rides for kids. Lying at about 2 kms away from the Taxi Stand, Nani Daman,
one has to take a 2 minutes journey by boat from Nani Daman Jetty to reach
the garden.
Other important tourist places in Daman are Forts of
Nani Daman and Moti Daman, irrigation pond-lake in Kachigam, Hilsa
summer house near Hilsa fish Aquarium and a few theme parks.
