Surat, the second largest city in Gujarat has a chequered history -plundered and destroyed by the Portuguese in 1512 and having passed into the hands of the Mughals, came to be known as the 'gateway to Mecca'. The East India Company established its first factory in Surat. Shivaji sacked Surat twice within a period of eight years. The last Navab of the city died in 1842, when it finally passed into the hands of the British. Surat is known for its Jari and Brocade industry.

Dutch Garden
The ancient Dutch gardens, the Dutch cemetery and Makaipul, the ancient original port from where the ships sailed to other parts of the world are the  attractions here.

Textile Market 
Surat's has a vast  textile market with fine silks and exquisite brocades.

Sardar Patel Museum
About hundred years old this museum has a collection of over 10,000 specimens of arts and crafts.

Rangupavan
It is an open air theatre with 18 meters by 10.5 meters stage and a capacity of around 4000 spectators. This is one of the biggest theatre in the country.

The Old Fort
The Old Fort was built by Muhammed Tughlak in the 14th century to fortify the defence against the Bhils. 

Dumas 
A sea-side health resort 16 Kms. from Surat.  It is a  well known health resort overlooking the Arabian. Cottages available for stay.

Hajira 
Situated 28 Kms. from Surat, Hajira beach is fringed by caserne trees and has a comfortable holiday home for visitors. Hajira has two wells with water rich in iron and sulphur. 

Bardoli 
It is situated 34 Kms. from Surat. Gandhiji had launched a farmers satyagrah, known as the Bardoli satyagrah in 1921-22 under the leadership of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Swaraj Ashram at Bardoli has become a place of pilgrimage in India. 

Ubharat 
Ubharat situated 42 Kms. from Surat, is known for its fine, sandy beach with a backdrop of shady palm groves.

Dandi 
Dandi, a salt centre is situated on the coastline around 55 km from Surat. Dandi is well known in history for the famous Dandi Salt March - a Satyagraha launched by Gandhiji in 1930 to protest against the Salt Tax levied by the British. It was a non-violent act  against the British Empire to attain freedom. 

Tithal 
It is situated 108 Kms. from Surat and 5 Kms. from Valsad on the Bombay-Vadodara Western Railway. It is a  beautiful sandy beach with  palm-sheltered cottages
